This fact sheet explores the Carbon Farming Initiative from the perspective of a dairy farm, and explores two scenarios. The first involved reducing fertiliser use in order to reduce emissions of nitrous oxide. The second involves planting trees to create a carbon sink.
The overall message for dairy farmers is to follow current best practice guidelines for irrigation management, fertiliser application and energy use as these actions produce the lowest emissions per litre of milk. Specific actions to generate CFI credits should be approached with caution as there is often a sting in the tail!
