Succeeding through the seasons – Acocks
Three years of zero water allocation led to the Acocks family increasing the proportion of annual pasture grown on the farm. The key changes to their operation include:
- A mixed ration fed is fed in a drylot over summer to avoid having to maintain permanent pastures during the hottest periods of the year
- The drylot includes a shade shed for minimising heat stress
- Strategic use of transferable water entitlement is a key strategy for managing risk
- Building relationships with local croppers and cropping contractors has improved the security of fodder supplies
