Succeeding through the seasons Part 1 – Lostroh

There has been a steady decline in rainfall over this period and irrigation allocations have been low leading to many changes in the Lostroh’s farming system. The key changes to their operation and their thinking include:

  • Irrigated pastures continue to be the main source of feed from April to November
  • Summer forage crops are grown for grazing and silage
  • More land has been purchased to increase the area for home grown forage
  • A deep bore has been commissioned to provide more water security
  • Feeding infrastructure has been developed to improve feed use, with partial mixed ration fed on the feedpad and grain feeding in the bail
  • Sprinklers have been installed in the yards to keep the cows cool
