Sustainable autumn milk production McInnes @ Radford

The strategies used by the McInnes brothers to maintain consistent milk production during the challenging autumn period when heat stress, low forage quality and increased incidence of ticks and flies include:

  • Splitting the herd into fresh and late lactation cows
  • Effective shade shed over feed pad to minimise heat stress
  • Maximise feed quality with high quality temperate pasture silage
  • Switching from forage sorghum to cow peas
  • Calving heifers and young cows from late January
  • Allocating irrigation water to corn for silage rather than for summer grazing
