The Kath’s produce 1.2m litres per year from 170 cows grazing 90ha with year round calving. As Andrew says, “True water use efficiency is about turning water into milk”.
The stand out result from moving to the centre pivot has been the greater ability to manage the quality and quantity of feed. Production from the ryegrass pastures has gone from 8 to 16 t DM/ha during May-October. With earlier planting, fine tuning the system, more precise fertiliser management and better grazing rotations, another 25% increase to around 20 tonnes DM/ha seems achievable with a ryegrass/lucerne system.
