Future Ready Dairy Systems

Dairy Australia

Going against the flow- grass fed dairy system

A continued reduction in irrigation allocations for the lower Murray Irrigation areas in South Australia has pushed many dairy farms to cease operations or to convert to total mixed ration systems. However, the Bartletts have retained their pasture based system despite climate variability and irrigation water uncertainty. They believe it is the most cost effective way to produce milk on their farm and did not require costly infrastructure development. This has involved:

  • Purchasing land as an appreciating asset rather than depreciating assets such as a TMR system
  • Over-sowing the whole irrigation area with lucerne
  • A major focus on making efficient use of the limited irrigation availability
  • Building strong relationships with grain and hay suppliers
